Introduction to my blog about Computing History

Computing History and Fujitsu

The second programming language I learned was Cobol, on an ICL 2903 mainframe running George III - little did I know that 27 years after graduating would I join Fujitsu and become a Fujitsu Distinguished Engineer.

Fujitsu has a long and proud heritage in computing in its own right, but did you know that until 2000, the UK based part of Fujitsu was known as ICL in the UK.

ICL's history reaches back to the dawn of computing with predecessor companies including:

  • ICT - based in Letchworth, ICT was responsible for manufacturing the Bombe, used by Bletchley Park codebreakers to unravel settings of the Enigma encryption device used during the Second World War.  You can see a working replica of the Bombe at the National Museum of Computing in Bletchley, Milton Keynes.
  • English Electric - better known for the Canberra and Lightning aircraft.
  • Numerous others will be added as the pages build - there's a fascinating history behind the technology we all take for granted.
